Down There

A snapshot of my day: I’m typing this with one hand, my baby girl is nursing, falling asleep as she lies curled up on her nursing pillow (the hilariously named My Brest Friend), and I’ve finally replied to the thoughtful birthday greetings on my FB wall. I’m over two weeks late, but hey, at least it’s still October. Plus, it’s 9 am, I’ve brushed my teeth and had breakfast. Score!

In between coping with sleep deprivation and the potent cocktail of first-time mummy hormones, I’ve been doing a lot of postnatal healing work. At some point, I hope to write articles or even a book on this, but at this stage, this blog post is all I can manage.

To anyone who’s given birth, I strongly recommend that you purchase Katy Bowman’s DVD, “Down There“.This DVD was a thoughtful gift from my sister, Aisyah ❤  Katy demonstrates a series of exercises to help you reconnect to your pelvic floor and strengthen the surrounding muscles. Actually, these exercises are fantastic for any woman struggling with pelvic floor issues – childbirth isn’t always the main cause of a weakened pelvic floor, but it definitely exacerbates existing vulnerabilities.

So if you know any first-time mums or anyone expecting, think of purchasing this DVD to help mummy along her healing journey. If you’re living in Sydney and looking for a lady physio who specialises in pelvic floor health, look up the wonderful Heba Shaheed.

Pilates, pregnancy and postnatal recovery

Looking for a fantastic Pilates studio in the Mont Kiara area? Please drop by Zenith Pilates ! I’ve been attending postnatal classes with Dehressa, who is my instructor, buddy and comedienne, rolled into one.  She’s the kind of instructor who can make you laugh while engaging muscles you didn’t even know existed.

Dehressa has walked me through private and group Pilates classes during my pregnancy, and now is helping me reconnect with my post-birthing body. The difference between pregnancy Pilates and postnatal is remarkable…it’s so much harder now lol. Maybe because I’m constantly sleep deprived :p I nearly fell asleep during some of the stretches during one class, but after a few days of having chicken and mutton stew, I’m feeling much stronger.

I barely had any back pain during my pregnancy, alhamdulilah, and I owe a lot of that to my daily walking and weekly Pilates sessions. Sitting on a gym ball and doing regular pelvic tilts and figure 8’s also helped. The consequence of an open pelvis? An easy birth!

Sound good? Check out Zenith Pilates‘ FB page 🙂

Daily Life article on my baby’s unassisted homebirth

Yup, I gave birth at home, and you can click here to read all about it.

My deepest thanks goes to Nadine Ghows for her life-changing Hypnobirthing course, and to Hayati Muzzafar for being our homebirthing doula! You ladies are an inspiration, and such gentle warriors on behalf of birthing women. We are so blessed to have met you both.

InshaAllah, gentle birth practices at home/hospital/birthing centres will become more of a norm in Malaysia and elsewhere around the world.

Don’t Just Sit There!

I’m thrilled to share Katy Bowman and Mark Sisson’s revolutionary program, Don’t Just Sit There! If you’re like most denizens of today’s modern world – GET IT. The early bird special runs out soon! If you suffer from back pain, stiff shoulders, or just feel run down from your desk job, then this program is for you.

I’m a huge fan of Katy Bowman’s work on the biomechanics of the human body, and I’m so excited to see how I can apply her principles to improve my daily posture, efficiency and overall health.

As a breastfeeding first-time mum, there happens to be a lot of sitting in my 24-hour job, and when my baby’s naps – if I’m not knocked out from exhaustion – I try to write. Yup, even more sitting.

I mean, even with the Malaysian ringgit being at a historical low, 27 US dollars for this program is a worthwhile investment. What are you waiting for? Go get it, and let me know how you find it 🙂

It’s been months since I’ve last updated!

I’d like to share some exciting news – on the morning of 25/06/2015, I gave birth to my baby girl, Taskeen Yusra 🙂 She has very strong lungs lol.

Unbelievably, my daughter (I have a daughter!) is already almost a month old. She has single-handedly catapulted my husband and me into a trajectory of adoration and sleeplessness. The broken nights are tough, but it is slowly getting easier. Smelling her new baby smell and gazing into her big eyes always helps 🙂

I am so, so grateful for the help of my family. Even the most basic things like stepping out to use the bathroom is challenging

In the midst of the chaos of breastfeeding, diaper changes, burping and all the necessities of motherhood…I desperately miss writing. To all literary mamas out there, how do you manage to juggle writing with a newborn?

PS: I’m a protective mama bear, so I’m not going to post pics of my daughter online….come by and visit us!

Book Review of Earthsea Quartet by Ursula Le Guin

There is sEarthseaomething captivating about epic fantasy classics. I’m rereading one of my old favourites – The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula Le Guin. This quartet includes the first four books from the Earthsea Cycle: A Wizard of Earthsea; The Tombs of Atuan; The Farthest Shore; and Tehanu.

While I witnessed of Sparrowhawk’s journeys in A Wizard of Earthsea, I could feel the crisp sea breeze on my skin, smell the salt of the ocean, and taste his desolation while he sailed into uncharted waters. The ability to transport the reader into another world is one of the hallmarks of well-written classic fantasy. As much as I enjoy my brief forays into dystopian YA novels, there is a lush, complex and gorgeous terrain only found in well-written, classic fantasy. Books like Tolkien’s and Le Guin’s take much, much longer to complete.

Le Guin’s writing style is both richly descriptive and tantalisingly sparse, leaving plenty of room for the reader to imagine the world of Earthsea. She expertly weaves themes like friendship, loneliness, the cost of pride and other human foibles into her stories. Any good story must have character growth, and Le Guin’s characters go on humbling journeys of self-discovery.

You know the old joke about fantasy novels? About how all fantasy worlds can somehow fit on two pages? Ha. It’s true, even in Le Guin’s case. This time, I actually made the effort of tracing Sparrowhawk’s journey on the map of Earthsea, and it made for even more vivid imaginings.

Without giving away too much, I’m curious about your thoughts on Le Guin’s take on gender, magic and mythology. Her depiction of women’s ineffective hedge magic versus the more serious craft of male wizards is…intriguing, particularly in today’s context of female-centric heroic narratives. If you ask me, I prefer a balance of both male and female protagonists. Le Guin is 85 years old, and she is unapologetic about her earlier works embracing the male-centric heroic narrative. I read one of her interviews, to help me understand the context she wrote in. Fascinating! In the Earthsea Quartet at least, the contrast between Le Guin’s gendered character descriptions to Margaret Atwood’s is very stark.

I’d like to end with an inspiring quote by Le Guin, given at the November 2014 National Book Awards:

I think hard times are coming, when we will be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, and can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies, to other ways of being. And even imagine some real grounds for hope. We will need writers who can remember freedom: poets, visionaries—the realists of a larger reality. Right now, I think we need writers who know the difference between production of a market commodity and the practice of an art. The profit motive is often in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable; so did the divine right of kings. … Power can be resisted and changed by human beings; resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art—the art of words. I’ve had a long career and a good one, in good company, and here, at the end of it, I really don’t want to watch American literature get sold down the river. … The name of our beautiful reward is not profit. Its name is freedom.

TED talk by Carol Dweck: The power of believing that you can improve

Tune into this wonderful TED talk by Professor Carol Dweck. I’ve recently finished her mind-blowing book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”. If you haven’t read this book, buy it, read it, and share it with everyone you care about. Professor Dweck offers clarity and insight into the age-old myth surrounding talent and effort, in all arenas of our life. We can apply growth mindset to enrich our classrooms, workplaces, and our relationships. I look back to the stressed out highschooler that I used to be, and I’m so grateful that there is an alternative.

Curious about growth mindset? Read this fantastic brainpickings article for an introduction.

Coming across this book has been one of the best parts of my job as an instructor at Axiom Learning, KL. My students teach me, every day, about the power of believing in ‘yet’, and not being stuck in ‘now’. My students who excel are the ones who believe that effort pays off e.g. I’ll get the hang of it! The ones who struggle are the ones who have more fixed mindsets e.g. I’m bad math. My memory is poor.

Here’s to having a growth mindset in all areas of our lives 🙂
